Home to roughly eleven thousand residents in the gorgeous East Bay Hills, the small city within a city known as Piedmont, California, has a long distinguished history known as the “City of Millionaires” in the 1920s. Today, the community is more often referred to as the “Mayberry” of the Bay Area, with quiet, tree-lined streets and a strong sense of community pride and family-orientedness. While the city can no longer claim to have the largest number of millionaires per capita in the nation, some of those millionaires’ opulent homes still stand.
Comprising two square miles, Piedmont is surrounded by Oakland and encompasses significant transportation arteries, including Moraga Avenue, which run’s near Piedmont’s northern border; Highland Avenue, which divides the city into upper and lower halves; Grand Avenue, which runs near the city’s western border; and Oakland Avenue, which runs from the city’s center south into Oakland. While the city has no true downtown area and is primarily residential, it does encompass a gourmet grocery store, a gas station, and a bank. And shopping and dining opportunities can easily be found in nearby Montclair, Park Boulevard, and Rockridge. What Piedmont does have in abundance is family-oriented traditions such as an Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and an old-fashioned Fourth of July Parade.
